Measure your Downstem to get the perfect length for your Pipe
What is a Glass Downstem?
Almost all Water Pipes need a downstem in order for the pipe to function properly. The downstem is the piece that runs for the Water Pipes Joint into the base of your piece. Downstems come in different lengths, diameters, and have different holes or slits which create diffusion to filter the smoke. Different downstem percolators create different diffusion such as how restricted or unrestricted a hit will be. There are are some Water Pipes that do not require a downstem because they are either natural downstems or fixed to the piece itself and cannot be replaced.
How To Measure for your Downstem Size
To make things easy as 1-2-3 we've illustrated (Illustration above) an easy way to measure the size downstem you will need for your water pipe. The first thing you have to determine is what size ground joint does your downstem have to be. The most common diameters of a downstem are 10mm, 14mm, and 18.8mm. Don't forget the diameter is the size where the ground joint protrudes from your pipe. After determining the diameter and size of the downstem its time to figure out what length downstem you will need for your pipe.
Here at Smoke City we determine and measure the length of the downstem by measuring from the tip of the downstem to the ground joint. So make sure you are NOT measuring from end to end. IMPORTANT: When measuring the length of your downstem, measure from the end of the ground joint to the end of the downstem. The goal is to make sure your downstem sits as low as possible into your water pipe without touching the base of your piece.

When in doubt Grab a Pencil
To make things easy and for getting the right length needed for your piece just take a pencil and stick it into the joint where your downstem goes. Mark the pencil off where the joint ends on your piece, measure it and now you’re all set with the perfect length for your pipe.
